transitional spaces: scratchwood motorway service station

The brief of this project was based on a transitional space of a motorway service station. The outcome had to capture the essence of the environment and communicate intrinsic information through interpretation. Outcome must be an A1 poster, in black and white.

I decided to focus on the hidden landscape of chewing gum created by visitors, found underneath the furniture in the motorway service station. I feel the action of discarding chewing gum shares similarities with a service station; disposable, dirty and unvalued.

The poster was created by mapping out all the chewing gum found and embossed them individually into the paper. The embossed information disappears like peoples’ memories of the motorway service station when left outside.
